Can you tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Emerson Wong. I am a 38 year old entrepreneur with a martial arts franchise called Pulse Martial Arts Academy. We are a martial arts brand for the modern times with a powerful social media following and wide reaching internet exposure with over a hundred million views of our videos. I also operate a charity where I help local youths through martial arts training and have an established martial arts school in Haiti where all students are sponsored and can train for free.
Describe how did you first get into Taekwondo?
I was watching martial arts movies at a young age looking up to Jean Cladue Van Damne, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. It wasn’t until I was 17 that I took up my first class in Taekwondo and excelled quite quickly. I also started kung fu a few years after and also dabbled in other styles such as capoeira, karate, and various martial arts weapons. I ended up receiving my 1st degree in ITF style taekwondo at 21 and then pursed WTF style taekwondo and finishing currently at 5th degree.
What makes Taekwondo special?
Taekwondo is special because it teaches great body control and discipline. It is rich in culture and practiced by millions around the world.
How did Taekwondo help you to be good at making business?
Taekwondo is a martial art that requires constant training to perfect techniques and to execute routines with beauty, power and ease. The discipline and self-control it teaches helps with the patience and hard work required to start and run a business. Without perseverance and the ability to have a focused mind, it will make it difficult to achieve short and long term goals.
What are your plans and goals for 2018?
My goal for 2018 is to open several more locations for my martial arts franchise and to establish instructor training programs. Once more and more locations open it will be important to have a strong instructional staff that can deliver the best service and to be able to handle all the various tasks of running a successful school.
You’re doing many projects at the same time, how do you manage your time?
The best way to manage multiple projects is to prioritize the most important tasks of each project. Having a great team behind you is also important especially if your schedule is not always consistent so that they can help pick up the slack if you are unable to meet the deadlines of some tasks on your own.
Do you have a morning/evening routine?
I do some basic exercise each morning and try to have some relaxation time before bed. It is important to have a healthy mind and body in order to take on the tasks of the day. Basic exercises would be like pushups and pull ups, squats or leg lifts and situps. Some basic stretching is also important. Only about 10 -15 minutes each morning or night is enough.
